Success for women in Mooni

The project has reached its sixth month, and work is in full swing. Much has been implemented, but not all - some parts still limping, but the objectives of the action is still realistic and possible to meet.

We have been positively surprised that the women is the ones who have the most active team in Mooni and are practicing daily. They have meetings once a week as part of Anna and Lindas internship and a women group has also been founded who meet once a week down at Nashibishu Primary School. Generally, a greater focus and priority in Uganda is on men as athletes rather than women, MSC is no exception when it comes to more active boys than girls in the club. But the girls are given equal footing with the boys and a little more, therefore it is extra positive when they really have become active and get what they want.

The first seminar of the club have targeted women and girls, and last month a seminar which focused on girls' role in sport was held. Over 120 girls participated in lectures and discussions end the day ended with a light meal. The seminar was successful and many participants also showed interest to start playing other sports than netball, traditionally played only by girls. Therefore, MSC is now trying to organize a women's team in football and basketball.

The Principal of Nashibishu is very pleased with the club's development, the school has received a clear sport profile and has already achieved some athletic performance at district level. The headmaster says that he has already seen the positive social effects and impact the club has on young people at his school. At the workshop Mbale Councils Representative for Sport, who have also lectured and emphasized the importance of girls' equal role in the world of sport, said that the National Council of Sports will start a national league for women next year.

MSC will definitely participate and have now begun to cooperate with other sports bodies in Mbale. There is also work done on the structure of a proposal to build a soccer field in the Mooni, but there are many instances that the proposal should go through and will take approximately one year before any answers are given. Until then football is continued to be played at Mooni Primary School and soon, hopefully, including both girls and boys.
