Oloililai Girls Student Foundation : Ongoing Projects
The girls' foundation was started as a Twiga project in 2001. The project started out small with sponsoring one girl's school fees. Since 2001 the girls' foundation has grown and we are now sponsoring fourteen girls at six different schools.
Initially the foundation was administered by one person in Kenya and one person in Sweden. As the work load has increased with the foundation expanding a committee of two people, Erika Rubin and Anna Winberg, have taken over the responsibility in Sweden. A steering committee made up by three women, Sainko Partelekkua, Veronica Sarbabi and Jocelyn Ole Gisa are now responsible for the day to day managing of the foundation in Enkokidongoi, Kenya. You can read more about the structure of the girls' foundation under co-operation and networks
The main objective of this co-operation is to promote women's rigths in general and Maasai girls' right to education in particular. This is mainly done through sponsorship of school fees in Secondary School for bright Maasai girls from Enkokidongoi area. In addition to this we also work with information spreading and lobbying on women's rights, both in Kenya and in Sweden.
The fourteen sponsored girls are attending six different schools: At Namanga Girls High School in Namanga five of our sponsored girls are studying: Florence Naini Kiroket, Sipando Lerindo, Salome Nastekurikoyian, Jackline Naneu Saetwa and Lilian Sein Mopel.
At Ilbissil Girls Secondary School in Bissil Maria Simayo Somoire is schooling.
At AIC Girls Secondary School in Kajiado we are sponsoring Jane Nkanoni and Jenipher Senewa Kanchori.
At Shalom High School in Athi River we have three of our sponsored girls: Emily Murasha Lemako, Angeline Naserian Munei and Joan Reson Kosiom.
På Noonkopir Girls Secondary School i Kitengela går två flickor som är sponsrade av Twiga: Magdaline Seleon Sankash och Joyce Neparnat Nkanoni.
At Maasai Girls Secondary School in Narok we have one girl. Ruth Namunak Yohana is studying here.
The girls are all very hard working and ambitious. They are happy and grateful to have been given the opportunity to continue their studies.
"To start with I would just like to say that I´m very grateful for the support you have given me. If it were not for you I could be married like some of my age mates as our traditions suggest. " Extract from a letter from Joyce Nemparnat at Noonkopir Sec. School.
For the time being we only have the possibility to sponsor the girls through secondary school. This is due to lack of finance. Our dream is to be able to sponsor at least a few of the girls throughout university or college.
Why a fund?
In our strive create stability and security for the girls in their education we have opted for a system where there is no direct dependency between donor and sponsored girl. All money that is contributed for the foundation goes in to a common account. The money is then divided and paid into the different school accounts to cover the school fees of each girl. This way, if one donor pulls his/her support the girls will not be effected in the same way as through more traditional forms of individual sponsorship.
