Oloililai Girls Student Foundation : Purpose of the cooperation
The main objective of this co-operation is to promote women's rigths in general and Maasai girls' right to education in particular. This is mainly done through sponsorship of school fees in Secondary School for bright Maasai girls from Enkokidongoi area. In addition to this we also work with information spreading and lobbying on women's rights, both in Kenya and in Sweden.
Below, you can read more about the purpose of the co-operation in our vision, mission and goals.
Vision
The impact of education for women is strongly linked with sustainable development. Studies all around the globe has shown that educating women is the single most effective way of reducing poverty. The Vision of Oloililai Girls Student Foundation is to empower marginalized Maasai women in Kenya through education. By providing possibilities for secondary education, the foundation helps to increase knowledge about women rights, the importance of education and the beneficiary impact of educating girls. This will decrease poverty levels and increase women's opportunities to govern their own lives.
The sponsored girls will pass on their knowledge to the next generation which will benefit the whole community in the future. These girls are envisioned to become role models for other girls and women and help raise women's status and strengthen the role of women within their own society.
Our vision is thus, a society where women and girls are treated as equals and have the opportunity to lead full, healthy and free lives while still respecting Maasai culture and heritage.
Mission
Our Mission is to, through sponsorship; support Maasai girls through Secondary education (and in the future tertiary education) whom otherwise would not be able to continue their further education after primary school, due to cultural or economical factors.
In a broader sense we want to promote girls and women's right to education through workshops and cooperation with organizations in Kenya that work with these issues.
In addition to the above, our mission is also to lobby for women rights and spread information internationally, through Twiga, about the impact of educating girls and women.
Goals
Our goal with Oloililai Girls Student Foundation is to support girl students the whole way, trough Secondary school to higher education e.g., vocational school, university or college.
By granting bright Maasai girls the opportunity of higher education the goal is for these girls to achieve good results in school, broaden their perspectives and provide them with a possibility to give back to their community when they have finished their studies.
The goal is thus for the education given to not only benefit the sponsored girls individually through new perspectives, knowledge and the possibilities of getting well paid employment, but for it to uplift the community at large.
The Foundation strives to educate and sensitize the public, both nationally and internationally, in general and the Maasai community in particular about the beneficial impact of educating girls and the importance of women rights.
This will be done internationally through lectures and information spreading on the internet and locally through workshops concerning the impact of education for girls, health issues and women right for the sponsored girls, the parents and community at large.
The Maasai men are an important target group since they are often the ones resisting giving girls education for economic and/or cultural reasons.
Another important goal is to link the foundation with Kenyan NGO´s and CBO´s that have vast knowledge concerning education for the girl child, the marginalized Maasai community and how to enable sustainable and culturally responsive development within these communities in Kenya.
