Uganda Committee : Literature tips
For those who want to learn more about the conflict in northern Uganda and about Uganda in general, we recommend the following books and reports:
- Moses Isegawa ‘Abyssinian Chronicles’ (1998). Describes the life in Uganda under the reign of Amin, from the early 1970’s and on to the 1990s in a very authentic way.
- B. K. Kasozi ‘The social origins of violence in Uganda 1964-1985’ (1994). Similar to Isegawa, but more scientific.
- Charles Miller ‘The Lunatic Express’ (1971). An entertaining book that describes the railroad construction between Mombasa and Lake Victoria. In-depth about the Ugandan history from the middle of the 19th Century until the railroad was completed in 1902. Easy to read, but a voluminous introduction.
- Thomas P. Ofcansky ‘Uganda. Tarnished Pearl of Africa’ (1996). Ofcansky is a senior analyst at the department of Defense in the USA. This story picks up the history where Miller’s end and describes the development in Uganda up to the election in 1996.
- Mahmood Mamdanis ‘Politics and class formation in Uganda’ (1976). Describes the reign of the English as colonists.
- Okot p’Bitek ‘The defense of Lawino’ (1969). Lyric. Explains the conflicts between the traditional and the modern during the colonial times and after the independence.
- Heike Behrend ‘Alice Lakwena & the Holy Spirits. War in northern Uganda 1986-97’ (1999). Gives an in-depth view of the conflict in northen Uganda. Part of the series ‘Eastern African Studies’ published by Hansen & Twaddle: "Changing Uganda" (1991), "From Chaos to Order” (1995), "Developing Uganda" (1998), etc.
- Holly Hansen ‘Landed obligation. The practice of power in Buganda’ (2003). Social historical monography about Buganda, highlighting the weight of reciprocal relation in Ugandan culture.
- Sverker Finnström ‘Living with Bad Surrondings. War and Extential Uncertainty in Acholiland, Northern Uganda’ (2003; Uppsala Universitet).
- Jan Kuhanen ‘Poverty health and reproduction in early colonial Uganda’ (2005, University of Joensuu).
- David Nilsson ‘"Water for a few. A history of urban water and sanitation in East Africa’ (2006). For those with a special interests in water and sanitation.
